Hitakatsu Pilgrimage
A short trekking course located near the port. There are 88 small stone statues along the trails and a stamp is placed for each one of them. It is said that your wish will come true if you visit all the statues. Please visit the tourist information center at the terminal and receive a sheet for stamp collecting and a stamp ink (please return after the pilgrimage). The starting point is located in front of Homanji temple. The course takes about an hour and you can see a wonderful view from the top. 3 min walk from the port (To the entrance) |
To-no-Kubi Ancient Burial Mound
An ancient burial mound consisting of four box-shaped stone coffins. From the inside and outside of these stone coffins, artifacts such as stone accessories, bronze mirrors, and bronze spears were excavated. Because many bronze wares were excavated from box-shaped stone coffins in Tsushima, it is called the "bronze ware kingdom." This burial mound was found in 1971 by an elementary school student. It is designated as a national treasure and draws attention as it illustrates Tsushima's interchange with Korea in ancient times. 5 min walk from the port |
Mt. Gongen
From the summit of the mountain, the emerald green sea of Miuda beach, Tonosaki park, Hitakatsu port can be seen. Beyond the horizon, the city of Busan can be seen when the weather is clear. The sight of ferries, cargo vessels, and fishing boats coming in and out of the port is distinctive of a border island. Tonosaki Park
A peninsula extending towards Hitakatsu port and a viewing area where Miuda beach and boats going in and out of the port can be seen from the vast hill. This place was also a landing point of Russian soldiers during the Russo-Japanese war after their naval ship was sunk. Although it was wartime, the people of Tsushima took care of the Russian soldiers by providing them with food, shelter, and medical treatment. Miuda Beach
A swimming area that received recognition in 1996 as one of "Japan's Top 100 Beaches." The natural white sand (rare on Tsushima) and the emerald green sea of the shallow beach are reminiscent of southern tropical lands. Toyo Battery Ruins
A battleship's main armament was placed in this fort in March 1934. Not used in actual battle, it has taken on the guise of a "phantom fort" but the barracks, pedestal, and cellar recall the appearance of that time. Korean Viewpoint
Kamitsushima Town, 49.5 km from South Korea, commands a view of the cityscape of Busan, Korea on fine weather days. It's truly the "national border town." Korea Translator Memorial
In the 16th year of the Genroku Era (1703), on the 5th day of the 2nd month of the Japanese lunisolar calendar, a governmental translation boat from Busan with 108 passengers intended for arrival at Tsushima shipwrecked at Waniura due to a sudden change in weather. All passengers perished in the tragic, accidental shipwreck. The accident's historic background became the basis for neighborly friendship and international exchange. Crossing over borders and minds, the stone monument was completed through the well-intentioned cooperation of the governments and people on March 20, 1991. Waniura Hitotsubatago Wildflower Area
Also called, "Nanjamonja" (What the heck is this!?) and "Umiterashi" (Shining the sea), the hitotsubatago were designated a national natural treasure of Japan in 1928. Three thousand hitotsubatago trees grow naturally in Kamitsushima town's Waniura destrict. Hekireki Shrine & Asahiyama Burial Mound
Within the inlet of Hamagusu, a cape juts out eastward where Hekireki (Thunderclap) shrine is quieted. On the mountain behind it, rare artifacts such as Han Dynasty mirrors, iron swords, single-edged swords, axes, hoes, and unglazed pottery were found in several foundations of ancient tombs. Momiji (Maple Tree) Road
A small festival is held on the scenic Momiji Road in Shushi in mid-November celebrating autumn colors. Walking along the maple road, you can see many beautiful Japanese maple trees adorned in fall colors, a cascade from yellow to deep red. 20 min by bus (Get off at Jinjya-mae 神社前 bus stop) |
The Great Ginkgo Tree of Kin
This large tree is said to be 1,500 years old and Japan's oldest ginkgo tree. The tree is still prosperous today, and in spring the branches are full of leaves. In autumn, they turn beautiful colors, and the fallen leaves in late autumn create a scene just like old Koban coins scattered around. Omega Tower
Did you know that Tsushima used to have the tallest structure in Japan? The 455-meter tall Omega Tower Tsushima stood from 1973 until 1998. The tower was part of the Omega system, a worldwide radio navigation system for aircraft. Omega became unnecessary after the advent of GPS, and the tower was dismantled, but the area in Kamitsushima where the tower once stood is now a park. |
